Show notes
What a perfect day looks like
- The hosts say a perfect day is not a beach vacation or doing nothing, but a day spent being and doing something.
- Big Shannon describes his version: water, journal and coffee, a workout, telling the kids they are awesome, then work that educates and helps people, finishing at 5:30 or 6 with dinner and family time, and about 30 minutes of video games.
- Little Shannon describes hers: getting up at the first alarm for boot camp, getting the kids to school, finishing the day's tasks, dinner together, and reading a book instead of using social media at night.
- In her ideal day, work would be writing a book and scheduling consultations to help people succeed.
Why it matters
- Most of life is spent sleeping and working, so the hosts argue work should be enjoyable.
- Not every day can be perfect because life happens, but the goal is to structure choices around moving toward that day.
- The hosts compare it to a road trip: start by getting in the car and heading in the right direction.
- Big Shannon gives a blunt message that a perfect day made up only of not working will not lead to achievement.
Time management
- Eliminating distractions, such as turning the phone off, helps things get done.
- Little Shannon says she needs to plan better, and that overfilling the day can take the joy out of it.
- She shares that cheerleading coaching has started to feel like work because of the time it takes.
Main takeaways
- Happiness comes from doing and giving, not from sitting and doing nothing.
- What gets scheduled gets done, so put your ideal day on the calendar.
- Do what is great for you, give back, and schedule the day.
Other topics
- A reflection on September 11th and the hope that people truly remember love, forgiveness and respect for each other.
- A guest is being lined up for a future episode about everyday life and how she got where she is.

Standing Stronger Podcast Season 2, Episode 7. That's right, it keeps getting better. My name is Shannon. And I'm Little Shannon. That's right, we're the power couple with the same name back with another Standing Stronger Podcast. I'm excited. Me too. It's going to be a great podcast. It's going to be an awesome podcast. We're going to be talking about the perfect day. What does your perfect day look like and why can we not just have a perfect day every day? Why not? So, do you want me to talk about what my perfect day would look like or would you like you to talk about your perfect day first? Which way would you like to go? You can go first. That way you can compare yours to mine?
Alright, so when I'm talking about perfect day, I'm not talking about going to the beach, having margaritas, doing nothing all day and sitting on the beach for the rest of your life. Because at the end of the day, yeah, we all need those breaks, but we are here to do stuff. We're human beings, not humans sitting on the beach. Does that make sense? We're being something, we're doing. You're a real life situation. Right, you're a real life situation. So I'm not talking about what's your perfect vacation day. I'm talking about what does your perfect day look like. I'll give you an example. This, in my mind, what would my perfect day look like? And this is what it would look like for me.
Wake up at 530. So we wake up at 530, I get up, I drink a bottle of water, get my coffee, come in, sit down, grab my iPad and journal. Very first things I do. Water, journal, coffee. Alright, then after the coffee, I work out. After working out, I get ready, tell the kids how awesome they are, send them off on their merry ways, then jump into work. And what does work look like for me in my perfect world? For me, work looks like sharing and educating and inspiring and helping people move forward. So educating, changing people's lives, creating videos based on the knowledge that I have that helps other people. So I'm not talking about motivational rah, rah, rah videos.
I'm talking about educational do this to achieve this type of videos. That's in terms of work, what it looks like for me. Then shutting down, shutting down work at 530, 6 o'clock and spending the evening preparing dinner with my wife, having dinner with the kids, spending time with the kids, putting the kids down, playing a little bit of video games and then going to bed. And when I say a little bit of video games, I mean like 30 minutes a day. I don't play video games now. So just to kind of clarify that is it's very rare do I get to sit down and play a video game. However, I like it. It's relaxing to me. It's something I would like to do to relax. I just don't do.
For me, that's what my perfect day would look like. Sounds like a good day. Yeah. What do you think about that? Tell me what you think about that, please. Well, I just wonder why you don't, what stops you from doing it? Exactly. And that's the point of today's podcast. But we'll talk about that after you talk about your perfect day.
My perfect day is getting up when the alarm actually goes off the first time at 5.30 and getting my butt to boot camp and coming home, getting the kids ready, getting them off to school and then accomplishing whatever task that is for me, whether it's the work on the computer or the cleaning of the house, the laundry, the errands, whatever needs to be accomplished in the day. That all changes every day. So yeah, accomplishing whatever is there. Cheerleading to be enjoyable and not feel like work. And then afterwards, do dinner together and enjoy our food together and get the kids ready for the night and read a book.
I like to think that I'm a reader, so I'd like to stay off of social media at night when I'm winding down and start reading my book. Leaders are readers. And that's it. That's my perfect day is to keep on task and accomplish. What does your work look like though? You're like accomplish whatever tasks they are. What does that work look like? Because my work is different. So my work is different every day. I don't have tasks that I'm going to be in front of the computer every day. It could be house stuff, I just wear a lot of hats in a day. So I don't have a, I guess what you're saying though is like what would my, in a perfect day, I'm sorry, I was just looking at my normal day.
So in a perfect day, it would be I'm sitting in front of the computer writing a book and scheduling consultations and just, again, that passion that I have to help people succeed in whatever they're trying to achieve. So that would be my perfect day. Sorry, I went on my normal day, but perfect day. Right, and that's what I'm trying to get people to think about is your perfect day. Not only what time do you get up, do you work out, do you not work out, but what work is it that you are doing? Because we spend, you know, the vast majority of our life is spent sleeping and working. So why not make sure one of them is enjoyable? I mean, you really can't enjoy sleep because you don't remember it.
But like make sure your work is enjoyable. So what does that work look like? Yeah, so that would be my work. That would be ideally what I would want to do in a day. I would be happy doing. Now, here's the question. What is your perfect day look like? So you can pause this if you want. Kind of think about that question. Write it all out and all that good stuff. But now here's the bigger thing. Why? Why are we not living that life? If in our minds that's ideal, why are we not doing it? I mean, I feel like anything you say is an excuse because you should be able to overcome things. But for me, it's time. Right. Now, not every day is not going to be able to be your perfect day. Life happens.
Life comes up. Things creep in. So every day, I get it, cannot be perfect. However, what our goal should be is to figure out what that perfect life looks like and then start structuring everything we do around moving towards that perfect version of our day. So it's not going to happen overnight. However, just like a road trip doesn't end as soon as you pick up your car keys, you need to take that first step. You need to get into the car. You need to turn the car on. You need to back out the driveway, get your route going, and start moving in that direction. Here's what I think the biggest problem with me, with you, with everyone.
I'm not saying it's just you people out there and we have it all figured out because guess what? I did not get up at 5.30 this morning. I did not work out this morning. However, I did get my tooth fixed and it's no longer black. One of the most amazing things that happened. That's not part of my perfect day, but today, that made my life perfect. Let me tell you what. I'm super excited about that. So life happens. But here's the point. We are stuck in whatever it is that we do. Here's the point is there's no reason why we should not begin moving towards what we feel would be our perfect life. And what you'll find out is what you think is perfect for you really is not perfect for you.
Now, I want to stop right here and say this. If I said, hey, listen, it's not about vacation. It's not about doing nothing. It's about what is your perfect day look like as you're achieving, as you're doing, as you're being. And you said my perfect day is me doing nothing. My perfect day is me sitting in front of the TV. My perfect day is me sitting on the beach. I don't want to work. Then you're a loser. And that might sound harsh, but you're a loser because guess what? You're never going to have that unless you put in the work. And you're never going to put in the work unless you start moving towards a goal.
And if you can't even think about your perfect day of what it looks like when you're working, if all it is is you not working, then you're never going to achieve anyway. So just keep doing what you're doing. Shut off the podcast. Don't listen to us because you're going to not achieve anyway. Yeah. Getting brutal up in here. Being honest. Well, I am being honest, and I think about this stuff myself. I point my finger at myself and say, quit being a loser to myself all the time. Stop being a loser. Stop talking about it. No one cares what you say. They care what you do. Yeah. You understand? So if I say I want to be rich and sit on a beach all day, who cares? You're never going to get it.
Go out there and do. What does your perfect day look like doing so that you can get to the things that you want, so that you can get to sitting on the beach? Because the beach never comes. The vacations never come. The house, the cars, the things, the stuff, which doesn't make you happy. But the things that you're striving for doesn't come without the work. And without the work, you need your day to be good. Because if you hate your life, you're never going to get there anyway. I mean, you might get there. There's plenty of people that get there that hate themselves or hate their lives. But why would you want that anyway? Right. Well, and I think a tip to that is time management.
Again, like when life happens and changes and things come through, you still have to adjust to the day. But for me, I'm not a planner, and I need to start planning better. I used to write out my finances all week. And that helped me stay on track. It's not that I'm off track now. It's just I don't feel as organized. And then I have time to be writing my book. I just put other things in front of it. Again, when I was scheduling that time and saying phone is shut off, this is happening right now, then things get done. You have to eliminate the distractions to make it happen. And again, we're just as guilty of that.
And I think when you start with time management skills, you really see how much opportunity you actually have in a day to accomplish. And then sometimes we overfill that. I mean, I'm kind of in that mode right now. Every second of the day I feel like it is taken to something, and then that becomes overwhelming. The joys come out of the day, and that's not right either. One of the things that I love the most is becoming work, and I've got to make it not work anymore to get that joy back. Are you talking about cheerleading? Yeah. So right now I'm still waiting for the full clearance for my JV coach. I'm attending the JV games. I'm attending the varsity games and everything.
I'm getting ready to start competition season. It's just every time I turn around, there's something with cheer, and it's like this is supposed to be fun and enjoyable, and it's now become work because of how much time is going into it. Right. And I don't like that. That used to be my escape of I get two and a half hours just like the girls do on that mat where the rest of the world doesn't matter, and now the whole world becomes about cheerleading, and that becomes annoying. You know what I mean? Like all the other stuff is like, well, I can't do this because I have cheerleading, or the kids are suffering for this because I have cheerleading, and that becomes annoying.
So again, that time management, life happens, things change. That's one of the perks of being in charge of a program is, and I'll get over that hump, but it doesn't take that feeling of I love cheerleading because I'm still looking at new things all the time to improve our mat. But, you know, it's the things of the day can become overwhelming and all-consuming, and you've got to time management. That's my whole point. Right. So I'm going to break this down, and it's going to be a little bit of a shorter podcast today just because last week was longer. So, you know, we've got to even it out for you. But like Shannon said, life happens. That's one of the reasons.
But here's some of the main points that I want you to get. Number one is happiness comes from being and giving or doing and giving. Happiness does not come from sitting and doing nothing. Happiness comes from giving to other people and doing and accomplishing things. So like in your case with cheerleading, you get frustrated because you feel like nothing's being accomplished. Right. Nothing's being accomplished, therefore it's frustrating, it's not fun, it's work, and it's hard. However, when things are getting done, things are moving forward, and progression is making you happier.
When you're giving to those kids, when you're seeing a difference being made into their lives, things are better. Right. So when you're thinking about your perfect day, remember, it's about giving and about doing. When you accomplish and when you give back, you are happier. Number two is what gets scheduled gets done. So saying you're going to do something is not good enough, schedule it. Because when you schedule it, it gets done. When it's put on the calendar, it gets done. When it's thought about, it never gets done. Right. So those are two very big takeaways from today's podcast is number one, do what is great for you. Number two, give back. And number three, schedule the day.
Schedule what you would like your perfect day to look like. And then when life happens, it happens. For instance, I lost a filling on a tooth that had a root canal Friday. So today at 8 o'clock this morning, I had to go to the dentist. However, even though it wasn't my perfect day, today has become one of the coolest days of my adult life because the black tooth that has been black since I was 15 is no longer black. And thank you, Dr. Augustiniak. You are awesome. I'm going to kind of take a little side trip to this. Sorry. Detour. Detour. Because today is September 11th, and we will always remember.
And I kind of want to touch base on that just because I see, I didn't post on my page, you know, like the picture of the towers, and I think that's great, and people want to remember. But I feel like those same people that are posting all of those posts don't remember. They do forget. Because on this day, it changed 17 years ago. Like it changed our world that we know, you and I know. There's people in the older generation can remember different things. Right. So for us, September 11th changed our world. And what I remember about that day, and, of course, I remember the tragedy of it. Absolutely. And I also remember the glory that came out of that. And as one nation, people came together.
And I feel like people say, oh, I remember, I remember, I don't forget. And I think tomorrow they forget. Tomorrow they forget that their neighbor is who they should be loving because you never know what tomorrow brings. Tomorrow they forget that that little spat they had with their kid before they went off to school, it matters because you need to tell them that you love them, kiss them goodbye, make sure that that's the last thing that they remember. You know what I'm saying? So, again, like I get the post and understand the whole realm of it is we will never forget. But I really would love for the world to just truly remember.
Remember their brother, their sister, their family in that moment, all the things that don't matter. All the crap that you're arguing on on social media right now. It doesn't matter. It doesn't matter. It doesn't matter. Who cares? The love that we're to show each other and forgiveness that we're supposed to show each other. Don't regret what is out there for tomorrow, the diagnosis or the tragedy or whatever it is. You don't know what anything brings next. We don't know what happens when we turn off these microphones and we go out in the world outside of this room. You just don't know.
And just to truly remember the love that we should have for each other, the forgiveness that we should have for each other, the respect that we should have for each other every single day for me is what needs to be remembered out of September 11th. That's right. And everyone, who was it, John Lennon, Yesterday, or was that the Beatles? Yesterday. Well, he was. Seems so far away. Blah, blah, blah, all that good stuff. Remember? Yes. I dream of yesterday. So you can't see this, but she just pushed my face away from the microphone. Stop it. That's how horrible it is. So the point is this, is you long for yesterday because, you know, tragedy can happen today.
And when tragedy happens today, yesterday seems so far away because everything was so perfect then. And we get so caught up in all the garbage, the stinking thinking, the negativity, that we forget. You say, yeah, I do remember 9-11. I'll never forget What we did forget and what we have forgot was a nation that was united, a nation that stood together for something instead of being torn apart about everything. So, yeah, that's a good one. Quote that. Tweet that out. We're standing together for something instead of being torn apart about everything. But let's concentrate on that as we move forward today. So that's my tip for the day, to have a perfect day.
Yeah, and for everyone listening outside of the United States, remember, America, put a boot in that ass if you F with us. So don't mess with us. Just said love, respect. Oh, yeah. Let's go back to that. You've got to remember. All right. So I think that will conclude our podcast. Are you good? I am excited. Oh, and we're going to we actually have someone lined up to join us soon. We're getting the questionnaire and everything put together for her, and she'll be joining us live to just talk about, you know, the everyday life, the real person, where they were and where they are now and how they got there and what they still go through.
So we're excited about that to bring in another person to join us soon. So we'll keep you posted on that. It is going to be an amazing, an amazing story. Oh, and I want to I want to put this out here. One of my I want to make a goal. I want to do an educational video every single day for the next 365 days. OK, I want to put that out there, babe. I've tried it and I failed like I've I've failed at this so many times. So I want to put it out there. Help keep me accountable. So by my by my birthday, I want to have at least 365 videos. It'll probably be 360 because I will take the video, the weekends off. But five days a week, whatever that is. That's what I want to do. There's 365 in a year.
360 isn't going to. All right. Well, I want to do a video every working day. That's that's my goal. I've tried it before. I've fallen straight on my face. I'm putting that out there right now. You can do it. All right. Thanks. Have a fantastic day. And as always, hopefully we'll see you on the beaches of the world, on the beaches of the world.
