SSP Podcast S2E6 Frustration, Mold and Pee

38:42

About this episode

Shannon and Little Shannon tell the story of a long-weekend trip to Panama City Beach that started with a desperate bathroom stop and an Airbnb condo that disappointed them. They talk through how they chose to respond rather than react, and how frustration often traces back to expectations. Listeners also get two practical Airbnb tips and an honest look at everyday frustrations in a busy family.

Show notes

The trip that started badly

  • A last-minute booking for a three-day weekend left few Airbnb options in Panama City Beach, so the couple took what was available.
  • A time change added an hour to the drive, and Little Shannon almost had to use a cup before finding a gas station with a long bathroom line.
  • The condo was old and not well maintained: no central heat and air, no overhead lighting outside the kitchen, and a hallway that smelled like urine.
  • Friends later shined a flashlight into the window air conditioning units and found mold in all three downstairs units.

React or respond

  • Shannon admits he first reacted negatively and wanted to find another place or go home.
  • Little Shannon suggested they eat, regroup and remember the trip was about the friends and the memories, not the place.
  • The pool, hot tub, grills and beach access were good, and the time with friends rated five stars even though the area rated two.
  • The idea of reacting versus responding is credited to Zig Ziglar.

Airbnb tips

  • Do not rely only on reviews. A review may not post until the owner responds, so negative ones can stay hidden.
  • Google the address and check street view so the building itself is visible, since the listing photos mostly showed the beach.

Everyday frustration

  • Back home, the first day after vacation was full of small frustrations: no alarm, a missing lunch item, a changed four-day schedule and a packed calendar.
  • Little Shannon was frustrated enough that her mood affected her son's morning, then drove past an accident that happened minutes earlier and saw the delay as a blessing.
  • The two note that they get frustrated by different things: schedules, people, time, and having to step away from work.
  • They discuss how expectations of kids, such as expecting a 12-year-old to act like a much older person, fuel frustration.

Takeaways

  • Frustration often comes from expectations, so keep them in check rather than dropping them entirely.
  • Circumstances should not be allowed to take over a whole weekend.
  • Choose to respond in a positive way, and keep the people you love as the priority.

Standing Stronger Podcast Season 2 Episode 6. That's right. It keeps getting better. My name is Shannon. And I'm Little Shannon. That's right. We are the power couple with the same name. We are. You better check it. Check yourself before you wreck yourself. The shotgun wound's bad for your health. So today we have a fun, fun, fun podcast. It's all about frustration, being frustrated. What frustrates you and how do you respond or how do you react to that frustration? Let me give you a hint, man. Did I react this weekend? Yeah, not just, I mean, I feel like I'm on this roll every day. So I need some help. Yeah, we, oh my goodness. It was supposed to be a fun weekend and it was a fun weekend.

It turned out it was a fun weekend. We had a great time spending time with family. Well, they're friends that I consider family. However, it just started off really bad. So we booked Airbnb, which we've done in the past. We've never been to Panama City Beach before. PCB. Yeah, PCB. West side. Never eat shrimp. Yeah, west side of Florida. So we waited to the last minute to book. We were vacationing with our friends and just a delay in booking. So by the time we did get to book, there wasn't a lot of properties available because it's a three-day weekend. So people booked up quick. So we went on Airbnb. We found this location.

It was, I knew already like it wasn't like where we would stay when we do our annual trip to St. Augustine or something. But I've never been to Panama City Beach, so I didn't really know the area. We looked, you know, at it. We looked at the photos. It was older, but, you know, doable. Everything had the room that we were looking for. So I sent out all the information to our friends. So this is what it is. I mean, this is pretty much all that's left if we're going to go there. So we looked and said, yeah, this is doable. So then we were on our way. Our trip was fine. I don't know what you're talking about anyway. Yeah, no, our trip was good. Oh, man, I had to pee so bad.

So I was like, oh, driving along, and I'm like, oh, I only have like an hour, so I'll be good. Like, you know, holding it, which is not healthy at all. But, okay, I'll do it because we were getting off at I-10. So it was like 1230, and our ETA, so on our watches it says 1230. However, our ETA on map says 149. So we're like a little over an hour away. Right. So, all right, I'll be good. We kept driving. Well, then the time changed. So then all of a sudden she goes, I think we just hit a time change because it went from 1230 to 1130. And our ETA is still 149. So now we're not just a little over an hour away. We're a little over two hours away. Oh, and it was awful. So we're driving.

There's nothing. Well, she's going down I-10, and in her brain she's like, I'll just get off. I'll wait until we get off at I-10 and then stop at a gas station. Not a good idea. Just a heads up if you're traveling that way. Nothing there. I'm like, how do people live here? There's nothing here. Yeah, we get off at I-10. Nothing at the exit. We get off at the Bonifay exit, if anyone's wondering, and start heading down towards Panama City Beach. And like she said, absolutely nothing. And I thought I was going to have to pull over and use my Chick-fil-A cup because I had to pee so bad. I had to pee so bad. It was starting to hurt my stomach. And Shannon's like, you have to pee really bad.

I'm like, how do you know? Like, how do you know I have to pee that bad? Because I really wasn't complaining about it. And he looks at my stomach. I'm like, oh, my, I look like I was like six months pregnant. That was a lot of pee in that bladder. It was like poking out. Oh, I was like, oh, my gosh. So I was like, oh, there's a gas station. And it has a subway, so it's got to be kind of decent. Halfway clean. Right. So we pull in. I jump out of the car. Now I'm moving, so it's even worse. Get up to the door, and there's laminated pieces of paper that say port-a-potties across the parking lot. I'm like, oh, no. This isn't good.

And I mean, it's just against everything I stand for to go inside a port-a-potty. So I'm like, can't do it. I mean, I'd rather pee myself. So I got back in the car. I'm like, okay, well, if this is here, there's got to be something, like, right down the road. There's no more else to go. And the lady in front of the line says, sorry, we're waiting on a guy that went in the women's bathroom. Blowing the bathroom up. We're like, sweet. So there's only two stalls. They run in. I'm still standing there. And these girls are behind me and says, oh, my gosh, I had to pee so bad. And I said, there's, like, nothing around here. And she just looked at me like I was crazy.

And I'm like, yeah, do you live here? And she's like, yeah. I'm like, oh, man, like, there's nothing here. I know. I'm like, okay. And this guy comes out of the men's bathroom, looks at her, and he's like, y'all cutting into my bottle drinking time. So we need to get going. I was like, wow. And then I realized. We are in the country. They had no shoes on. So I would be more worried about, like, what you're going to catch in the bathroom with no shoes on. Anyways, just different strokes for different folks. We get in there. Literally, I peed longer than it took three other people to come in and out of that other stall because I had so much pee.

We leave, and I'm like, man, everybody is looking at me like I have three heads. The guy's, like, holding the door for people, and I go to walk out the door, and he just lets it go. I'm like, what is wrong with me? Like, I don't get it. And I realized everybody is in Alabama shirts, swim trunks, hats, and I had on my Gator sweatshirt. We were in Alabama and FSU country. So you don't realize, like, where we are here, there's a big mixture. You don't really see, like, Miami fans. You definitely wouldn't have seen that up there. FSU in Florida, mostly. Oh, and the Knights, now that they're good. Yeah, I mean, like, you see all different fans here, I feel like, in Florida.

Anyways, but that's no longer Florida. Like, I used to say, like, Jacksonville is, like, Georgia because it's right on the line. It's real, like, no. When you hit there, there's... Alabama beach. Alabama beach, FSU, like, that is it. And they don't play nice. They don't, like, oh, you want me to hold the door for you? Nope. And they, like, slam right in my face. I'm like, this is crazy. Anyways, so that was my travel there. So then we get there, and we're like, oh. Shannon's like, look at the ocean. You guys see the ocean from here? I'm like, you can see the ocean right here. I mean, I feel like that is, like, the direction of the ocean.

I'm like, you see the teal right there, right behind the sign? It's the ocean. It was a roof. It was a roof to a building. And we're going down, and we're like, I'm like, wait a second. I'm like, I didn't think that. That's the roof to the building. Anyways, so we turn on the strip, and it's busy. It reminded me of, like, Clearwater Beach. Right, I'm like, holy cow, we're, like, in. Because we normally try to stay away from the commercial areas. Right. And where we're from on this, well, actually, you know, on the Gulf side and on the Atlantic side, we know where to go and where to stay away from. Never been to Panama City Beach anywhere. So we really had no clue.

So we're staying, like, right on the strip. And we're driving down the road. Everything looks nice. We're coming up, and it's like, your destination is on the right. And I see the building. I'm like, oh, this is nice. I'm like, good job. And then I'm like, wait a second, that's not it. It was the building next to it. So we go to the building next to it. I'm like, please tell me this is not it. It was old. It was an old condo. It was very old. It might have been the first condo they ever built. It was old and not well maintained. Listen, I have no problem with old. Yeah. Well maintained is the problem.

I'm looking at it, and you're just seeing the black streaks come out of the air conditioning window units. Yeah. And I'm like, oh, I'm like, all right, well, let's share and see pictures of it. I know Shannon The nicer units in the place. And I do think it was. That's so bad to say. I will say we were not the only ones fooled by this because it wasn't like we pulled into the motel parking lot and there were 1982 LTD cars. No, listen. Here's the thing, though. The outside amenities were well, were good. You know, a nice pool. You had a hot tub. The beach was right there. The beach literally walked out onto the sand. So all of that was great.

However, I just love sitting at the pool and watching the faces of despair as people walked in and looked around like, holy crap, what did we do? I mean, there were, you, I mean, you know, and I'm not trying to sound like it's going to sound bad. Like, I feel like we sound like we're like uppity right now, but that's not it. Like, you just have a, I'm not going to take my children to vacation and sleep in a motel. And that's basically the difference. Like, there was a hotel and a motel, and I wouldn't take them there. Anyway, so we go in. It was not, like, unlivable for the weekend. And for me. Listen, there was zero light fixtures. There was no light fixtures, no central heat and air.

We're in Florida. Florida in the end of August, beginning of September, the hottest time of what? No central heat and air. That wasn't disclosed. Air conditioning units. There was no overhead lighting except for in the kitchen. Yeah. You know, where we would sit and play cards or eat dinner, no lights. We had to, like, grab a lamp from one of the bedrooms and put it at the end of the kitchen table just to eat. I'm looking at this place, and I was, like, talk about frustrated. I got mad. I'm like, what in the world did you just book for us? I'm not staying here. And this is the thing. Like, for me, now I look at it, and I'm like, oh, it's really bad.

However, the people that we were with, I knew it was going to be a fun time, and I knew, like, there wasn't, like, bugs on the inside. It wasn't, like. It was not super dirty. It was not, right. However, let me rephrase that. It was dirty because I was scared to turn off the fans because I did not want to see what was on the fan blades. And if anyone knows what fan blades look like when you don't clean them after years and years, I know that's what the fan blades look like. But I'm like, I'm not going to psych myself anymore. I'm just not going to look at them. Not going to turn them off. I'm going to search the bed for bed bugs. We're good there.

However, then our friends get there, and they make the discovery. So we actually. We got there first, so we got the nice bed. No, we're big people. I am a big person. Well, I'm bigger than she is. Yeah, that's true. Compared to them, we're big people. Anyway, so I literally, like, I couldn't take him anymore because then it becomes, like. I'm unbearable. It becomes unbearable. So the option became either you suck it up and we enjoy the weekend we have with our friends because it's a three-day weekend. There's nowhere else to stay. Right. Everything else. I looked. Everything else is booked. Like, there's nowhere else to go.

We either suck it up and enjoy and make the best of it, or we meet our friends, spend the afternoon at the beach, go eat dinner, and say, hey, we're out and we don't stay. I mean, and I was all right with that. Like, whatever, because I can't be miserable the whole time. It's not an option in my brain. And he just goes and goes and goes and goes. So then it makes, I don't want to be miserable. And if he's miserable, we're all miserable. So, like, it's not like if mama's not happy, nobody's happy. It's if daddy's not happy, nobody's happy. Like, that's how it rolls around here. Listen, and I'm not a miserable person, but when I get mad, like, it takes me a couple hours to chill out.

So they got there and they were the same way. It was like, this is not, like, the pictures did look like the inside, but obviously you're not, like, you can't see blinds and fans and light pictures. And it just looked like an un-upgraded condo, but not, like, downgraded. You know what I mean? It wasn't like that. Listen, we walked up and we're walking and, like, every single unit faces the ocean. Every single unit except for one. Guess what? I'm looking at the number and I'm like, no way. We walk into the hallway and it's like this little hallway and I'm like, ooh. It genuinely smelled like urine. I'm like, it smells like pee in here. It smells like pee. She's like, it's not that bad.

Like, she's trying to be positive. I'm trying to find the positive. She's trying to be positive. I'm like, it's okay, just unlock the door and get inside. So, yeah, we go in and I'm like, oh my gosh, this is so bad. So we're in the only unit not facing the ocean in a hallway that smells like pee. Oh, man. Inside, at least, did not smell like pee. Just kind of smelled like musty old carpet. There was no carpet. Oh, there was carpet in the bedroom. It was, okay, so. Now let's get on, let's get on. We had a decision, either stay or not stay. We all decide we're going to stay. Here's the thing, we decide the time with each other is more important.

We'll spend our time outside on the beach, on the pool, because the pool area, the grills, the hot tub, all of that stuff was actually good. There was no problems, in my opinion, on that issue, on that area. That was all fine. So we're like, we're just going to sleep here. So we're good. We're just going to sleep here. So we all get ready. We go down to the beach and get in the water and into the pool and have a fantastic time, everything else. And we're like, we'll go out to eat tonight. And so we get back to the room and all that good stuff. So the boys had gone to get us bottled water and stuff at the store. And Crystal. And alcoholic drinks.

We only had one of each because we're responsible adults. So Crystal goes into the bedroom and something happened. Something happened. No, this was after we went to dinner, this discovery was made. I don't remember. We went to dinner, actually, and she's right. That's where we found it. We went to dinner and then afterwards we went to the store. Oh, yeah, you had to go to the store and get cereal and stuff. Right. So something dropped on the floor. Something Crystal got out her flashlight. No, that wasn't what happened. Crystal's like, this air conditioning unit isn't working really well. So why is it not blowing really well? Because it wasn't blowing the greatest in that room.

So she's like, well, let me just look in here and see what's going on. Yeah, so she takes her flashlight from her phone and looks in and discovers there's mold inside of there. Air conditioning unit. So we're like, oh, God, is it in the other ones? We look in the other ones, yeah. And all three of the downstairs, because it had two store walls, there was a loft, all three of the downstairs ones, guess what? Mold. So, yeah, we – whatever. It was a great weekend. It ended up being great memories. Yeah, unless we all died of mold poisoning. We're still not out of the clear, like out of the danger zone. I know. We'll see here in about – if there's no podcast next week, you know what happened.

Don't joke like that. So, no, for real though, like for me, it was a definite – I've never had that experience on Airbnb, honestly. We both said, unfortunately, what we did not realize when we were looking at the pictures, all of the outside pictures were of the beach, looking outwardly. So we didn't realize what the building – if we would have Googled the address, we would have seen the building, the street view building, and that would have told me right there, like, not happening. We would have moved on and either found another destination or whatever. So that was our first thing. The reviews were good. Everything was good. I do not – well, here's the problem is what we found out.

We left a review on Airbnb, and Airbnb says, oh, the review's not going to post until the owner responds to your review. Therefore, she just doesn't respond to the negative ones. So anyone that actually looks at that place and thinks it's garbage, no one gets to know that because she never responds to the reviews. Therefore, those reviews are not seen. So now we know all of the reviews are going to be good on Airbnb because they're not posted unless the owner responds. So tip number one, don't always just go strictly off of those reviews. Tip number two, always Google the address so you can actually see the building.

So even with that being said, like, I've lived in Florida my whole life, okay? So I've seen a lot of beaches. I have never, ever been to a beach where you can't walk down the beach because – and I get it. I understand the purpose in a way. hurricanes and they've been devastated over there, but even on Miami, like, you can walk down the beach. You could not walk down the beach because it was a hill up to the sand. So it went whoop and then a drop off to walk down. So when we actually tried to walk the beach, we walked sideways down. It was not enjoyable at all. So I would say our trip to Panama City was a two star, and that's because of the company that we were with. Right.

Well, in terms of the time we had with the people we had, it was a five star. Oh, yes. Yeah. The area where we stayed, everything else, two. I will not rebook. Like, I wasn't impressed with Panama City. I was not impressed, obviously, with the place where we stayed. Even if we would have stayed in the resort next door, you know, to our motel, I just, the area, just it wasn't, just did not make me happy. The whole point of that story is just to talk about frustration and how we got frustrated. And there was a choice to make. You either react or respond to those things. And this is something we learned from Zig Ziglar. You can react in a negative way or you can respond in a positive way.

And at first, let me tell you, I reacted. Like, and it was not, like, I was mad. I was like, we're either finding another place to stay or going home. Yeah. That's it. Those are the only two options. And I'm like, like, this was a horrible decision, Shannon, because Shannon, in our family, Shannon books the vacations. Like, I really don't have anything to do with them because I say I don't care, but obviously I do now. But Shannon, Shannon generally, and this was just a one-off. So Shannon knows my taste and what I think is acceptable and what's not acceptable. So generally when we stay places, I'm like, you went a little too overboard, not holy cow.

Can we actually let our kids sleep in this place? But I reacted in a very negative way. And Shannon, luckily, I've been blessed with an amazing wife. And she's like, let's just chill out. We're going to go and eat. We're going to regroup. We'll figure out what we're going to do. However, what we need to realize is this was not about the place we were staying in. This was about the company that we were coming to see. This was about the time we were going to spend with the people we love. So let's remember that above all other things because all of this other stuff is just material. The memories that we can make from this will be forever. So let's just remember that.

And, you know, after a good burger, getting some food in my thing and woosawing it up, I'm like, you're right. It's not about where we're staying. Yeah, we might die of mold poisoning, but we'll at least have the memory before we go. Yes. And not that I want to crowd our beaches this way because we're still on the Gulf Coast. But I even listened to a radio show this morning, and they flew in to PCB. And she's like, oh, I'm from Texas, so we have this beach and this beach. But I wanted to take our family for a getaway, so the best beach, you know, from that would be PCB. And I'm like, you don't get very far. Because I'm like, I feel like we have much better beaches down this way.

I mean, I wouldn't even go and stay at Clearwater Beach now because it is so commercialized. There isn't a way in and out of there that it's just too much. So for us, it's like the Treasure Island, St. Pete, you know, keep going. And there's a lot of beaches we haven't been to in Florida. Anyways, I'm on that kick. Like, we won't go back there. Right. So let's talk about responding to it instead of reacting to it. Well, and even after that, we got past that once we were with our friends. I felt like, I mean, there was still like because of— Well, we all still joked about it. I mean, we're not going to just forget about it. Every time we walk in there, it's like, you know, you got to chuckle.

Like, holy crap, this is where we're staying. Right. So—but even outside of that, it's like we got home last night. You're still in vacation mood, so the suitcases just get put up against the wall. Now, I knew everybody's routine had to come back today. I was like, I need to go back to boot camp. I need this, I do that. And I'm like, I'm still tired. So I didn't set that alarm. And then got up, got in the shower, got the kids ready, and I was like, I don't have the crustables for Mackenzie's lunch today. So we got to leave a little bit early so that I can get that on the way to school for her lunchbox. And it was just frustrating. Everything was a frustration.

She comes in, I'm at my desk, and she's like, I love you. I'll talk to you later. Yeah, I just get—I'm like, what's the issue? Nothing. I just get overwhelmed, and I hate that feeling because it's not a good feeling to be frustrated all the time. And I see it, and I've said this before, like, I don't want my kids to see that. And I see it on Jordan's face because it's like, geez, Mom, I just wanted to ask you a question. Or, like, I can't joke with him in that moment. I can't—and I hate that. Like, his morning, I was infecting his morning. He was excited to go to school. He was excited for mismatch day. He was, you know, all these things. He's being silly, and I'm like, you know?

Yeah, I guess so people see birds. You know? And then I'm driving along, and I'm like, here we are. If I would have been on time, I pull up right, and an accident had just happened probably three minutes before. And we were literally three minutes off of our schedule. And I had to say in that moment, like, thank goodness for the, you know, frustration that was in place this morning to put me behind because in that moment I was frustrated and mad, but it was such a blessing because, I mean, there were airbags that went off, kids in a van.

I mean, everybody's trying to get off to work in school, and it looked like people just either weren't paying attention or slammed on their brakes and just, you know, piled. It was four cars just hit the back of each other, and the minivans, airbags deployed, the engine smoking, the kids in the car seat in the back. You know what I mean? That could have been us. So it just, and I hate that in that moment it takes me to go, ooh, eye opener, you know, but I feel like I'm frustrated all the time. And I think it's even, like, because I get to where I just don't think there's enough time in the day anymore because everything, I was already overwhelmed based on the calendar for the week.

We have a four-day week. Your schedule is all the way off because you were off Monday, not Tuesday. You know what I mean? And when I say off, I mean out of the office, off. But you know what I mean? Like, the whole schedule, so then it messes at pickup times. And I have cheerleading practice. That ruins everything. You know, just Mackenzie has dance, and every day there's something that's adding to it. And then it's like we can't even sit down at the dinner table together because we're, and so we've become those people for a long time. I thought, why don't families just sit and eat together?

We have not become those people because sitting and eating dinner is a priority, and we will not compromise on that. I look, this week's schedule does not permit for us to do home-cooked meals at a dinner table. We will still make it dinner wherever we're at. I get that. I'm saying, like, our home-cooked meal schedule is off. So, again, frustration of like, how does this all come back together? I can't be the only one that struggles with it. Yeah, I mean, everyone does. I mean, I have all those frustrating moments and stuff, too. I just get frustrated over different things. Like, you get frustrated over the schedule. I get frustrated over the people. You get frustrated over our time.

I get frustrated over not being able to step away from work. Well, let me rephrase that. I get frustrated on having to step away from work. So you get frustrated because we have so much on our plate. I get frustrated because I have to actually step away from work, and I'd rather not step away from work, which is a horrible, horrible thing to have. But, man, I just love doing what I do. But the frustrations are different for different people, but we all have them. And one of the great things that she possesses in helping me is realizing that this is happening for a reason. And sometimes I don't know exactly how to help you realize that it is happening for a reason as well.

Yeah, and I get that, too. I think I need to work on how I eliminate that overwhelming frustration feeling to begin with. I mean, it's very often. I guess that's the part that's bothering me. Like, why is it? Why do I go to that level of frustration very quickly and then have to bring myself back out of it? I guess that's really what I need help with, too. place of I'm going to knock his head off his shoulders. Yeah, we're at the store. I call her and she's like, no. I'm like, whoa, what is going on? All because of like the common sense factor is out the window. The kid is smarter than all get out. I mean, he is like Google. He is YouTube. He is like, you could ask, he's you.

He, you can ask him the most random question about an ant eater and he's going to know the answer because he did a report on it in third grade. Like he remembers all that stuff. I'm not that way, but you, the most common sense things and you're like, are you serious right now? What, what? And it's like, takes me to a level. And then I'm like, why can't I function? Why can I not function? It makes me feel like an inadequate mom. It makes me feel like, it makes me feel like a bad mom. Like I told you, I told you that on vacation. I'm like, I'm just not cut out for this. It's a little too late because I have two of them, but I just, I'm not, I am not that put together mom.

And I know that, let me even back up. That really doesn't exist because it's put together is what someone is. They still have their frustrating moments and days. And I understand, I totally gather that, but I am just not, I don't know how to put it into those terms. Well, I say that all the time. Like I'm a, I'm a, I'm a great dad. I'm a good mom. I do know that. That's what I'm saying. I'm a great dad. However, I am not a great dad. There's things we, there's things that we excel at and there's things that we're just not good at. And we always have to work on. And it's those things when we realize those, that frustrates us because we want the best for our family.

Like you get frustrated with the kids super easy. Just in, in everyday life, I get frustrated with the kids super easy, especially when they're being loud. I will tell the kids I love them and hug them and kiss them all day long. However, I will not spend the time that I need to spend with them in terms of quality family time. Because I can only take about 30 minutes and then I'm like, okay, I can't take it anymore. I got to go, I got to go back. But, you know, in other ways, I'm a great father. I'm a great provider. I'm a great encourager. I'm great at helping them with, with certain things. However, I'm horrible at spending time with them.

I'm horrible at getting super frustrated and mad when they're loud and laughing and having a good time. It's like, be quiet. Well, and I feel like we're really good at discipline, you know, and I think a lot of kids lack that these days. You know, so the expectation is there, but that same word expectation is that's what I think does get me frustrated a lot is, again, that expectation word, expecting him or her to understand and gather. They're just kids. Right, we're expecting them to be adults. I'm like, Jordan's only 12. So it's like that sentence can say like, come on, you're 12. But in the realm of things, I have to say, come on, he's 12. You know what I mean?

Like, what was I thinking of doing at 12? You know what I mean? Or my mindset. So I know it will get better, but I can't have the expectation of a 12-year-old to be a 17-year-old. You know what I mean? To say like, are you serious? And then a 17-year-old to be a 25-year-old. You know, it's just that's what, that is, see, I just need to talk it out. It's expectations. Yeah, and a lot of times, too, our expectations with Jordan isn't a 17-year-old. Our expectations with Jordan is a 30-year-old just because he's so intelligent in the way he acts and the way he carries himself. So when that 12-year-old comes out, we get more frustrated because we're not used to a 12-year-old.

I mean, we're talking about, I mean, one of the most perfect kids that ever lived. Well, and I think us being with our friends this weekend, we're on that same level, though. Like, we're all together. Like, I'm watching their daughter, and I'm like, that's so awesome that she's going to be 14 and is still so innocent. And it's kind of scary. I won't lie about that because then I'm like, the innocence, because that can be a scary situation. But she wasn't worried about being on her phone, strutting the beach, putting on these Daisy Duke shorts, whatever they call them now. You know what I mean? With their stomach hanging out. I think they just call them shorts now. Underwear, I don't know.

But, you know, it's like she doesn't have that mindset, and I am amazed at that, and I love it because you don't see that, like, anymore. You know, Jordan is still like, let me go flop around the ocean and ride the wave and this, that. And I know that's different boys and girls, and I've seen that through the years. I've always said, like, boys stay at a younger, enjoy childhood, I think, way longer than girls do because they want to grow up so fast. But, you know, to see their kids and see our kids, they were having a blast being kids. So in that moment, too, of understanding, like, it's really okay because things could be so much worse.

We could have bigger dilemmas on our hands than, Jordan, how did I just tell you where something is, and you're going to walk around like this? I can't see anything. I don't know where my glasses are. But you can be a mile out on the beach and see us waving you over. I don't get it. Right. You know, so anyways. All right, frustrations turns into expectations, and that's true because I expected something with the condo, which was disappointing. So our frustrations, man, we are good. Actually, you're good because you discovered this, but frustrations come from expectations.

So we need to keep our expectations in check because if we can keep our expectations in check, we can keep a lot of our frustrations in check. And I think you're right by saying in check and not lowered. It's not about having the expectations, period. You know, you want to have a good time. You want to enjoy your moments together, make memories and things like that. Yes. But our trip really could have been disastrous and ruined if we would have let those circumstances overtake our whole weekend. And we were blessed to have friends that didn't let that take over their weekend either. They realized as well it wasn't about the place we were staying.

It was about the memories and the time that we had with each other and turned out to be great. So we need to wrap this up because we're almost at 40 minutes. Okay. So with that being said, listen, we all get frustrated. We get it. We were frustrated this weekend on a vacation. However, we need to make the most out of our days and out of our lives. We got to realize sometimes some of our frustrations need to be put in check and check our expectations and enroll and respond to the situation instead of reacting to the situation.
