SSP Podcast S2E4 Your Clutter vs My Clutter
About this episode
Big Shannon and Little Shannon compare two very different attitudes to clutter: he holds on to things in case they are needed later, while she feels suffocated by too much stuff. They share funny stories of belongings she gave away, and invite listeners to say which type of person they are. The episode also opens with a short rant about not being life coaches.

it. Standing Strong Podcast, Season 2, Episode 5. That's right, it keeps getting better. My name's Shannon. And I'm Little Shannon. That's right, we have the same names, just in case you didn't know. The power couple with the same name. Welcome back to another episode of the Standing Stronger Podcast. Welcome back. Yeah, today we're going to be talking about clutter. And not just a clutter desk. We're talking about clutter everything. It's going to be fun. It's going to be great. Make sure you stay tuned. And that's our daughter. Because we're four hours late. In the background. So, let's pause. It's okay. It's alright. This is the real deal.
I mean, we started Season 1 and Mackenzie was always with us in the room. Come in, Mackenzie. Or not. We will need to take a short break. We do need to pause. Potty time. We do need to pause because Mackenzie is going potty. And she still thinks wiping is disgusting. So, she needs help. Okay, I'm back. There we go. So, it's for real. Like we say all the time. This is the real deal. So, I just got to wipe her ass because she... Sorry. Well, I'm not sorry. Sorry, podcast. I can say whatever I want to say. So, anyways. Little children needed help. Solved their problems. And she even said, thank you, mom. And it's all done. So, well worth it. Anyways. So, I'm... You know, we're way off today.
We started late. We're off schedule. We left the house. The drone got delivered. We were not here to get it. So, they took the drone away with them. And that gives me major anxiety. Yeah. So, they said they're coming back today, though. That's exciting. And they're probably going to ring the doorbell while we're doing this. Yeah. So, we'll get to get the drone. All right. So, I have a little bit of a rant I want to go on before we get going on this. because sometimes for the longest time when I was younger, one of my goals and aspirations in life. So, when I was in my 20s, think about when we were in Jacksonville, babe. Okay. When we were in Jacksonville, what was one of my goals?
What did I want to be in life? If you can, do you remember? When we were in Jacksonville? Yeah. Like in my 20s when I was like, oh, yeah, yeah, that's great. What are you doing? They're like, oh, I'm a life coach. And I'm like, sweet, life coach. You're driving a 1958 Chevelle that doesn't run, living in a one-bedroom apartment with debt up to your eyeballs, and you haven't even showered today. But yet you're a life coach. So, my rant is this. We're not doing this. This podcast is not because we think we're guru, motivational life coaches. That's not what we are.
What we are are broken individuals who have not figured it all out but are doing our best to make the most out of all of this here. So, with that being said, I'm not downing all life coaches because I think there's a place for them. And we actually have a friend who uses one. So, there are professionals out there, people that do it well. However, don't get caught up in the whole life coach thing, motivational thing, because here's the thing about motivation. Sorry, go ahead. Here's the thing about motivation is Zig Ziglar said it best, is it's like bathing. You need it daily. Yes.
So, yeah, come here for a little bit of motivation, inspiration, stuff like that, but don't hang your hat on other people. Go out there and get it yourself. Yeah, and I think in the big realm of things, like, aren't we all life coaches? Aren't we all, like, here? That's what we're designed for is to help other people achieve more than what they believe in themselves at that moment. I feel like that's my gift. I mean, I joke about being, like, a professional life cheerleader because I love cheerleading so much. I'm just ignoring the voice in the background.
So, again, yeah, so I think in the big realm of things, like, we're created to all be life coaches and help people get through their days. Or, you know, that is what we are here for is that there's just so many people that get lost and then, you know, we are real about something, and that's our biggest feedback is, like, you guys are so real. Like, when you said this, I could relate to it. And we just are those people that don't care what the world thinks of us. We just are who we are. We know we're broken. We know we make mistakes. We know, you know, but we also know, like, we're human and we're going to be better the next time, the next day, you know, things like that.
So, again, I'm not doubting, and I think there is a profession for a life coach. I mean, there's definitely a need for it in a deeper sense than what we're going to go to. But I understand what you're saying. Well, I guess I need to clarify, too, is I hate it when people take a picture next to the Lamborghini and then jump in their 1932 Honda Civic. Right. That, you know, it wasn't even made in 1932. That's how old it is. That's how bad it is. Yeah, just don't mislead. Don't be misleading. I guess that's my point, is there's so many people out there trying to act like they have it so together, and that's not who they are.
And I don't want us to come off that way as, oh, we have it so together, and that's not who we are. What we are are broken individuals just like you're broken individuals, and, yeah, we do have some— That person that you just pointed to is like, I'm not broken. Who are you talking about? I just listen to you guys because you're crazy. Right, you are broken. You just don't realize it. And the point is we all need to get better. And don't follow a life coach just because—that's a better way to say it. I've said it wrong.
Do not follow a life coach just because the aura that they put out there is all together or the perception that they put out there is they have it all together because they don't. Right. No one does. All right, so rant over. Rant over. Moving on. Yeah. All right, so today we are talking about a cluttered desk is a sign of— A genius? Wait, where is it at? Yeah, so for Shannon, it is a sign of genius that sits on his desk, and believe me, there's clutter all over this office. And I have to say that's not all his fault. A lot of it is cluttered because of me. If you want to get an idea of what we're talking about, follow us on Instagram.
It's at BigShannon, or at BigShannonHarrod, and at LittleShannonHarrod. I'm getting a glimpse of our clutter in our story right now. But for me, a cluttered desk or a cluttered area, whatever it is, is a sign of chaos. So we're on two totally opposite ends of clutter and what it means. So I'm gonna go with Big Shannon first and what does clutter do to your day? Does it eliminate or make it hard for you to be productive or anything like that? Alright, so I tend to hang on to things. Probably more than I should. If I showed you my closet over here... Oh, let me pull up Instagram and show you. Yeah, we're gonna actually show that on Instagram after we're done. So make sure you follow us.
If I showed you my closet, you would understand when I say I tend to hold on to things that I probably should not hold on to things. Where Shannon is the complete opposite. She tends to get rid of things even though she should not get rid of things. I want, actually I want to do this. If you're listening, whether it's live or after the fact, I want you to comment below on what you think is in Shannon's closet. Ooh, that's a good one. Yeah, I want to know what you think is behind that door. Right. Okay, so here I'm gonna tell a story about my lovely beautiful wife. No, this is about you, right? Okay, well I'm just gonna talk about what it is you do to me.
He's gonna be apologizing next week because he was mean to me. No, this is true though. So one year, right after we got married, so it was probably the second year we were married. One of the years before that, for Halloween, I was a vampire. So I bought a cape. About three years later, I was like, ooh, I can use that cape for this costume. I'm like, babe, where's my cape? She's like, uh, I gave it away. I'm like, what did you give it away for? She's like, you weren't using it. I'm like, I only need it for Halloween. She's like, yeah, but you didn't use it. So I gave it away. I'm like, you got to be kidding me.
So not too long after that, for our, uh, one of our wedding gifts, we got an egg McMuffin maker. If you've never seen this, it's the most amazing thing in the world. It's a toaster. And on the side is a little steamer that you put an egg in. So you put the toast down, put an egg in there. You like crack it and put the egg in there. And as it toasts it, it steams the egg and you put like ham on top of that. And when you're, when you're all done, just take the toast out, put the egg on cheese, ham, boom, egg McMuffin right there. It was a great product. Yeah. An amazing product. I don't. And I used it all the time. However, the problem is she went to work at seven.
I went to work whenever I felt like it. So I'd get up, I'd make myself an egg McMuffin, go about my day. So one day I get up to get, make an egg McMuffin. I'm like, babe, where's the, where's the egg McMuffin maker? You did not use it every day. You're such an exaggerator. I used it a lot. You're so dramatic. Yeah. Where's the egg? Where, where was it? Where was the egg McMuffin maker? I'm just wondering. I gave it away. You gave it away. Yes. Yeah. So. I didn't know it got used. Yeah. No big deal. Then I went to make myself a grilled cheese sandwich. And we had a grilled cheese sandwich maker.
Where, you know, one of those little things you put the butter on, you put the cheese on, you smash it down, put it together. And then you, you know, pop it open two minutes later and you got a grilled cheese. Go to make myself grilled cheese. Where was it? I gave it away. That's right. And we can keep going on. We can talk about the George Foreman, my clothes. All right. So. So. The point is, is I tend to hold on to things because I, I think to myself, I might not need it right now, but who knows when I'll need it. So I might as well keep it. Guilty. Yeah. Where Shannon's like, we're not using it right now. So let's just get rid of it, clear out some space.
And if we need another one, we'll just buy it again in the future. Yeah. So I heard about that for so long. Obviously. Clearly. You're not over it. Still not over it. Still to this day. Like I search for my stuff. I'm like, has she thrown it? Has she given it away yet? It's under a lock and key. I'm not allowed to touch anything. Yeah. Every time I see a bag, I'm like, what's in that bag? What are you giving away? Well, let me go through that bag first. Let me go through that bag before you give it away. Because I went through his closet and got, now that like those were polos from like years before.
And I'm like, hey, can you take this out and put it in the trunk of the car so the next time by Goodwill I can, you know, toss it off? And he takes it outside and he goes back and he's like, these are all my clothes. And I was like, you don't wear them anymore. He's like, I do too. And they were so old. But so from that point on, I never ever threw anything else away. I didn't. I still don't. Except for my waterproof ear pods and some other things that you don't know magically disappeared. She's like, I know I put them somewhere. I just don't know where. I can't help it. So for me, it is a, there's too much clutter. Like I become like, ugh, I'm suffocating. It's too much.
Like I can't be productive. I'm unorganized. Like if you get in his car, there will be water bottles all over the front floorboard. You can't get in as a passenger. All you got to do is take all the water bottles out of the floorboard and the car's clean. So it's not like trash of like food and things like that. You used to be bad about that. But you don't do that. You don't really eat fast food anymore. You actually stopped to eat and go in. But the cups, which you kind of bring in. I do bring in the cups. So it's water bottles all over the floorboard of the car. So if I have to use your car to take Jordan to school, we have to take the recycle bin to the side of the car, fill it up.
It's the reason I do that is because she keeps yelling at me to recycle. So I'm like, I'll just keep on recycling. I just never have time to recycle. So for me, but my car, not that it's like super clean all the time, but I try to keep all the trash picked up every couple of days. The kids stuff in the back seat, there's napkins, you know, clean it out. But for like we have an extra closet, like it gets over stopped. And then I just feel like I'm suffocating. The extra closet is all my stuff. It's just overwhelming. What can be cluttered around you? Do you think we can get rid of some of this stuff? No, I did. I got rid of some of it. What? I don't remember. No, I just rearranged.
Yeah, I think that's what happened. You rearranged. But that is my point. So if I walk into our walk-in closet, there's shoes all over the floor. It's overwhelming. So what kind of person are you? Like comment below so we know, you know, we're not the only ones in the world that you either have the person that can thrive in clutter and make the world around him happen, or you have the person who is not super organized like any of my friends or family will tell you. Like I am the least organized person ever. But I still need to have rhyme and reason to stuff that's happening around me. So, you know, what kind of person are you?
Do you get suffocated with clutter or do you thrive and produce in the midst of that clutter? Right, and with that being said, let's just clear this up. I'm not a dirty person. No, I don't think you're a dirty person. I'm not a hoarder. Why did you say no? Because it's obviously debatable. Well, I'm not a hoarder to the fact that. We're not going to disclose what is in the closet. All right, but I don't, like when you walk through our house, you're not like trying to walk through a stack of boxes and stuff. That's not how it is. If I allowed it. No way. Whatever. No way. I don't know about that. I would not be that bad. I do have a problem with letting things go though.
Because they could be of use at a later time. I don't know. But they're valuable things. Now, there's an extreme hoarder like what you're talking about. Do I think you're that person? No. I don't think you're like the. You know, that show Hoarders. That's not me. Yeah, but like Jordan's just as bad. Jordan is just as bad. Like to clean out his room. Like I need to do that without him here. He is that like, don't. No, no, no. That paper that I wrote on in third grade. Yeah, I'm going to need that paper. For what? Well, I don't know, but I need it. Like he's like you in that sense. But whatever. But you guys both have like that genius mindset.
Like you guys, your brains Respect, what it does, how it does it, where it does it, and what's the best place to do it. Braces. You know how many people's teeth that we've looked at on YouTube. Look at this person. Look at this person. Look at, babe, do you think this tooth, this is crazy. My teeth are moving, so what do you think braces do to your teeth, Shannon? Right, well, and now, however, let's look at the positives, though. I know exactly how to clean them, the best way to clean them, and everything else. I'm not saying it's wrong. I'm just saying I'm not that way. And then I showed her, I'm like, babe, do you do it this way? She's like, no, I never thought of that.
I'm like, yeah, see? So my weirdness comes in handy. But this is the difference, too. You don't have a kid being like, dad, can you come wipe my butt? Dad, I'm so hungry right now. Dad, can you do this? Dad, can you do that? They do. They do do it to me. No, they do not. When I'm not here. Exactly, and where are you getting ready to go? Yeah, to cheer. Oh, yeah, and how often are you at cheer? All the time. They do not do that every day, all day to you. I get it every day, all day. Whatever, excuse maker. We gotta wrap this up. I have cheerleading now. So today's been a fun podcast, I would say, right? Yeah, no, I mean, I like the Q&A part.
So message below, let us know, are you a person that is a sign of genius or a sign of chaos with clutter? Whether it's on your desk or in your life, in your car, wherever it is, comment below, let us know. We're gonna put up those pictures on Instagram. Maybe I'll take one of your Egg McMuffin paper. I went back, and I don't know if I said this, I went back and bought him all the things. For Christmas one year. Yeah, so for Christmas, I didn't ask him what he wanted, I just went and bought the Egg McMuffin maker. I went and bought the grilled cheese maker, bought the- Oh, the waffle maker. The waffle maker. I bought all of this stuff and wrapped it and put it underneath the tree.
And then he was like, did you pay full price for this or did Goodwill still have this? Did you go get our old stuff from Goodwill or did you actually buy brand new stuff? And I bought it brand new because someone else- The George Foreman. You got all of it. All of that one year. And I don't touch it, but it doesn't get used anymore. It does get used. The George Foreman has not been used. Well, since we got the big green egg because why the heck would I cook on a George Foreman when I have a big green egg? It's still in the closet. Well, give that to Goodwill. I'll let you give it that away. Evidence proof. And the waffle maker is because you're like, I'm not using a waffle maker.
The waffle maker is so hard to clean. And you guys use it and then you don't clean it. And then I have to clean up after you guys. It's disgustingly gross to clean up. You can't art that waffle maker in particular. You can't just take it apart and clean it. Like it's annoying. And I make pancakes a lot. She does make pancakes. I'll be like, babe, I want pancakes. She says no. I made pancakes way too much. All right, we got to wrap up. Sorry. All right, today I've had fun on today's podcast. Did you have fun today? Yeah, I think you're going to listen and realize you were really mean to me. I was not mean to you today. You just happened to give away all my stuff and you called me a hoarder.
So who's mean to who? You're like, he's a hoarder who throws water bottles all over his car. Disgusting. Don't forget to guess below what's behind the closet.
