SS 011 Watching Water Boil
About this episode
Shannon and Little Shannon use a pot of water that won't boil while watched as a picture of goal-setting and impatience. The two talk about instant gratification, working out, and building a business from home, then share three tips for getting through the waiting stage of any goal. The episode also covers a contest, a support page and a closing prayer.
Show notes
Catching up
- Recorded for a third time because Big Shannon is sick; the two decide to keep coughs and sniffles in because they are real people.
- A weekend wedding in St. Augustine for friends of about 12 years, and Big Shannon's 35th birthday.
- Big Shannon explains he now sees birthdays as another year alive to be thankful for.
- Their daughter Mackenzie is three months old.
The boiling water idea
- Little Shannon watched a pot of water refuse to boil and saw it as a picture of people who give up on goals because they get anxious and impatient.
- Watched or not, the water takes the same time; staying busy with the next steps makes it feel quick.
- Big Shannon's hot dog example: start the water, then get the buns, sauerkraut, mustard and a drink ready while it heats.
- Expecting instant change, such as getting fit in one workout after years of gaining weight, or a business growing overnight, leads to frustration.
Instant gratification
- Little Shannon is reading The Best Yes by Lisa TerKeurst and shares a line about becoming fearless and fighting through doubt, discouragement and awkwardness.
- Big Shannon is reading a different book by John Bevere and admits he struggles with wanting quick results, especially in working out.
- Both compare today's instant access (Google, phone maps, Siri) with dial-up, encyclopedias and paper maps.
- They say hard work and discipline make the result more satisfying, recalling graduating high school and finishing basic training.
- Working from home and building the business are areas Big Shannon is still learning, and they are not looking for instant results there.
Three tips for the waiting stage
- Understand the process: know where the starting line is and what steps lead to the goal.
- Continue to work: keep moving through the hard times instead of watching the pot.
- Know the end result: without a destination you only drive in circles.
Housekeeping
- A rate, review and subscribe contest has about 14 days left, with five Standing Stronger t-shirts to give away; winners are drawn from a hat and announced on the podcast.
- Listener support is available through a Patreon page starting at three dollars a month.
- A free report on three tips to stop depression and anxiety is in the works.
- The episode ends with a short prayer for listeners and for Big Shannon's health.

Standing Strong Podcast episode number 11. Every day is a new day. And everything's going your way. But you want to make it last forever. We'll keep it together because it keeps getting better. What's up everyone? Welcome back to the Standing Stronger Podcast. My name is Shannon. And I'm Shannon. That's right. We have the same names and this is take three because I'm sick. And when I'm sick I can't talk. So you know what? Shannon just yelled at me. She said, we're real people. So we are not going to cut anymore. If I sniff into the mic or if I cough, well, it's just going to have to stay, I guess. Yeah. You're just going to have to deal with him like I'm dealing with him today. Yeah.
Well, I'm a big baby whenever I'm sick. Tell me about it. I can't help it. So yeah, I give it up to all those morning DJs across the world and radio personalities who have to get on the microphone day in and day out no matter what, even if they are feeling under the weather, because it's tough to do that kind of stuff. Yeah, I bet. I'm just finishing up the day doing this, so I'm dragging a little bit, but this keeps us going. Standing Stronger and this is what everybody's all about, right? Just being real. That's right. Real people with real results. If you hear him cough or sneeze or the baby cry, guess what? We are real people. See, that's not us playing with the rattle.
I don't know if they can hear that. However, they might be able to hear it. I don't know. That's our daughter Mackenzie. She's three months old now. I'm trying to find the show notes so I know what we're talking about. But today is going to be an exciting podcast. I know that because we talked about what we were going to be talking about earlier. So this week we had fun. We went to a wedding this weekend. We did. It was awesome. Our friends Ashley and Steven, they got married up in St. Augustine and it was a beautiful wedding right on the water and it's gorgeous out. And good time with family and friends. Yeah, it was a good time.
I told Shannon, I'm like, man, we're getting old when we no longer go to the weddings of our friends. We're now going to the weddings of our friends' kids. Yeah, but you know what? It was so cool because we've known them well before, as long as we've been married. 12 years or so. So 12 years we've been a part of each other's lives and became quick family and they're just awesome people. A lot of fun to be around and we wish them the best. Yeah, they're going to make a good couple. I can tell. Plus, we told Steven, you know, you mess with Ashley, you get the smackdown. Yeah. So that's how it goes. Yeah, we did. That's how it goes.
However, that's where I think my sickness originated, not from the wedding, possibly from the wedding because I shook a lot of hands and did not wash my hands every single time. However, I think I know the root of my sickness. I shook someone's hand, I came home, I ate potato chips and then stuck my finger in my mouth and licked the potato juice off. Anyone that doesn't know him personally, you don't realize what kind of a germaphobe weirdo because if you've ever watched the Big Bang Theory, he's like Sheldon. There's an episode where he gets the flu from hugging Penny and that's what you reminded me of telling me that story. Well, I mean, it makes sense. I'm like, I knew it.
It's funny thing about it. As soon as it happened, didn't I tell you that's it. I'm getting sick. I know it. You convinced yourself of it. Yeah, you're right. I did convince myself and then I got sick. However, we were at the wife's sister-in-law's house and she has this little spray thing. I'm like, whose house? My sister. Yeah, your sister, my sister-in-law. She has this little spray thing and for some reason I'm allergic to those aerosol cans, so that didn't help either. Now, I sound like Urkel. I think you just wanted a break from the family because we actually quarantined him into the side of the house where the office is, Jordan's room, he took over, Jordan's bathroom.
So, I've kept the kids in my room with me and we have the kitchen and the living room. Yeah, so we have a floor plan. I think I might be getting sick. Someone quarantined me. Yeah, we have a split floor plan, so our master bedroom's on the opposite side of our other bedrooms, so they've all stayed on that side of the house. I've stayed on this side of the house because Shannon can get sick because she's breastfeeding and the baby can't get sick. Well, just because she's a baby and our son, he doesn't want to get sick either, so they just all stayed away from me. All right, enough about us. What are we going to be talking about today?
Well, another thing we celebrated this weekend other than the wedding was your 35th birthday. Oh, we didn't have to talk about that. You're getting old. Yes, I am getting old and that's just another reminder of we don't go and see our friends get married. We see their kids get married. Let's just say our friends are older than us, that their daughter is getting married. They are not our age and their daughter getting married. They are older friends, but yeah, their daughter's probably 25, 26. 28. Oh, 28. Yeah, so she's not that much younger than us. No, not much at all. However, I am thankful that I had a birthday.
I used to hate birthdays because I just looked at it as me getting one year older. However, I look at it now another year that I'm alive and I'm thankful that I'm able to have that other year because there's people who woke up on my birthday who, well, who woke up and that was their last day or people that did not wake up at all. So, I'm here for another day at least and I'm happy about that. You've lived longer than Jesus. Yeah, that's true. That's how I look at it. I made it to as long as Jesus did. I need to get to work. I have not done, I have not changed the world yet. No, we're working on it one podcast at a time. Right, exactly. However, I don't know what I was going to say.
All right, we're talking about boiling water today, which makes absolutely no sense, but I'll let my wife explain that. What do you mean it makes no sense? It makes a lot of sense. The other day I was cooking in the kitchen. Well, I'm saying, when I say we're talking about boiling water, they think, what are they talking about boiling water for? So, it makes no sense to them now. It will when we're done. Yeah, we go through a lot of our days metaphorically since we've been doing the podcast.
The other morning I was standing in the kitchen and I think I was making oatmeal or making Jordan something, I don't know, and I was standing there watching this pot of water and I don't know if you've ever done that, but it would not boil. This pot of water just sat there and the burner was on and didn't forget to turn it on. Just sitting there and sitting there and sitting there. I thought, what is taking this so long? I can remember growing up people always saying, don't watch a pot of water to boil because it'll never boil. But if you go on about your business, it'll still take that pot literally the same time to boil, but sitting there watching it doesn't help it boil.
But while I was sitting there, I thought, how many of us are like that? We sit here and we make our goals and we want to change the people to better ourselves and we get so anxious and worked up over it that we end up giving up before we achieve that goal. For me, metaphorically, it just hit me that we're like that boiling pot of water. Yeah, especially when I want a hot dog. It takes forever. You want a hot dog and you sit there and you watch it and you're like, come on, water boil already, and it never happens. However, whenever, you know, if a hard-boiled egg, who wants a hard-boiled egg? It boils really fast. Hard-boiled eggs don't boil fast.
If the water boils a lot faster, I'm just saying. All right, we're really not talking about boiling water. We're really talking about you as an individual. You want to change. We want to change. You're always striving for excellence to achieve better and to look at that as we are boiling pots of water. That's right. And if you expect change to happen instantly, to work out one time and actually be fit when it took 20 years to get fat, or you want your business to grow overnight, it doesn't happen. It's like that boiling pot of water. It has to have time to get to the boiling point. And it's in those times that we become the most frustrated because we get impatient.
We want the instant gratification and the instant results. And that is one of the biggest problems I have. However, we're not to my story yet. So you got your book thing that we're going to talk about first Right. You know that was our point and next time you sit there and wait for a pot of water boil you're really going to think about us. Right and exactly.
How I see it is like this if you watch the water boil it's going to take forever however if you continue working if you continue doing other steps you need to do for instance in a hot dog I take the water I turn the water on for it to start boiling I pull out the hot dogs I cut the package open I get the buns out I get the sauerkraut out because I love sauerkraut and the brown spicy mustard and everything else that I need I pour myself a glass of water and by the time that all happens the water is starting to boil you see it's taken the same amount of time than if I would have just stood there and watched the water boil but I continued along the process I continued to work I continued to move forward while I waited on that water to boil.
So when you're working towards a goal you set that goal in motion and you continue working you continue moving forward as you move towards that goal and before you know it there you are you're at it you've got a whole bunch of other work done and you've accomplished your goal. Yeah I mean like I said we do a lot of things metaphorically these days and that really stood out to me because like I said we always want to move forward we want to see that end result and I'm reading a book right now and I'm loving it it's called The Best Yes and I cannot pronounce her last name but her first name is Lisa.
Lisa I don't know how to say her last name and I don't have the book right in front of me to try and pronounce it out really but the book's a great book and I apply a lot you know to my life right now and one of the paragraphs I noted it says we have to desire to become fearless with these moments fight through the doubt discouragement and awkwardness of the new and I felt like that's so true and you know where we're at and how often that happens you know we the desire to become fearless in these moments of what you're trying to achieve you know how many times do you say oh I want to do this and then you're afraid of failing you're afraid of you know where that success is going to take you or you know like she says that you have to fight through the discouragement you know discouragement to me I know we've gone through things when we've lost friends along the way you know we've lost you know you start exercising and you start hurting you know because your muscles are weak and you've got to build up or you know we've talked about you know not losing weight fast enough you get discouraged and you think well I haven't lost a pound and I've been working out for two weeks you know but maybe you need to do something more you know but become fearless in your those moments to help you achieve you know the outcome you're desiring yeah and I think you say her name Turkeyhurst Lisa Turkeyhurst it is hard and I'm probably saying that wrong as well but it's the book the best yes by Lisa Turkeyhurst I have not read it so all of this that she's talking about I have not read with her so she's reading the book I'm actually reading a different book by John Brevere but yeah for me it's instant access I struggle with it big time not instant access instant gratification it is like instant access though right instant access instant gratification in the same terms yeah it could be looked at the same way for instance when it comes to working out I used to be an athlete a very very good athlete not just a tall awkward athlete but an actual athlete I hope he's listening right now our brother-in-law this weekend he's like you know I picture Shannon when he was younger he you know he was probably you know one of those awkward athletes you know he was an athlete but he was tall awkward athlete I'm like no no that's not what I was I was I was a good athlete he said be able we get home and he comes down to visit you need to pull out the news we are pulling out every single newspaper clipping and making him read them oh it's so funny well he it's like well he well you're short awkward well no because he he knows me as grown-up Shannon after my knees started hurting and I was in my accident in the military and and everything else so yes I am tall awkward athletic now but wasn't all of my life so whenever I'm working out it's I feel my mind says you can go so much harder my body says yeah right fat old man you can do five push-ups not not ten pull-ups you can do half a pull-up and then grab the assist bar because that's all you're doing on your own you know and then I get frustrated because I feel like I should be so much further along in the progress I feel like the water should be boiling already when in reality it's still in the spigot yeah you know and I have to I have to turn on the I haven't even turned on the nozzle yet I need to get that flow back I need to get to that athletic place I can't do it just you know relying on what I used to be because what I used to be is not what I am today even though what I am today is not bad it's just not what I was I was an athlete before however back then I was a jerk you know I'm a little bit overweight now but I'm at least bearable well you know it's taking the determination you know we lose that along the way because of the instant gratification and that's our world right now and everything you know when you say instant access I mean you get mad if a page doesn't pop up online within three to five seconds but in reality remember dial-up? yeah and then god forbid somebody picked up the phone right then you had to start all over 30 minutes later you looked at one page beyond that before we had what encyclopedias we had I mean please that's why everybody was not so smart back then you say I read that big thick book now you just go to Google but that instant access you know we carry computers in our pockets our iPhones right you know we sit there and oh we're lost we talked about that this weekend I learned that there is not a shortcut from our house to Jacksonville it's actually an extra hour on our trip because I thought I knew a faster way why I thought that and why he listened to me is beyond me he never listens to me when we're in the car but we did and it took us an hour out of our way and he was already not happy that morning for other circumstances with our animals but so beyond that I learned that did not work but we pulled out our phones instantly well you know what got me where's the map you know and we talked about you know Shannon's dad was a truck driver and he could tell you how to get anywhere and if you know we would take trips and I can remember him pulling atlases out our son has no clue and will never know what an atlas is that's right and when I first moved to Jacksonville when we were just married I had a job where I drove around Jacksonville and I had these little mini maps and everywhere I went I'd pull out a map and I would say okay this is the street I need to go to and then it would give me a quadrant like B7 and C6 and then I would find the quadrant see where I was and then route the best possible you know route to get there and then remember all of these places I had to turn in my head when I took off to go nowadays it's like Siri take me to my house and it routes you right there it's yeah it's a life of instant gratification you're exactly right so you know that happens and then you know even working out people don't work out anymore they go and have surgery yeah you know they think oh well that's too hard so they put their bodies through unnecessary things that in reality if they worked hard a lot of them could be yeah they can't achieve it instead of having a tummy tuck just because you don't want to put in the hours in the gym you know put some hours in the gym and there's people that I know end up having to have certain surgeries and things like that and that's different but in the realm of what we're talking about you know see it takes hard work and discipline to succeed and you have to take that route and you have to stand the fight and in reality I think it makes you happier in the end when you've achieved it yeah you know you're proud of yourself right you know I can remember as silly as what it sounds you know I remember the day I graduated from high school and thinking in my head I've done it this is the first thing I've achieved on my own that no one else did for me you know I had to put in that hard work I had to put in those grades I had to get through it and I can remember that completion feeling now you know I've completed other things since then but that was the first time in my life that I felt like wow I've accomplished something you know that that was something that made me feel good I'm sure we all have that thought somewhere in our head when I think about it it's when I graduated from basic training and you know marching in that formation you know after going through 12 weeks of basic and AI You need to become an infantry soldier in Fort Benning, Georgia.
Yeah, I remember that very vividly, like, wow, I did it. This was tough, but I did it. Right. So, you know, don't look for that instant gratification. Go for it. Put in the hard work. You're going to feel better in the end. You know, I say that, you know, and I need to listen to what I preach because, you know, for us, like many, working out is very hard to stand strong on. And building this business, that's hard for me. You know, Shannon has preached to me multiple times that I am not a good stay-at-home worker. Yeah. I'm like, I need to teach you how to work from home. I'm just not. I need a schedule.
I need, you know, and him and I are working very good at that, you know, or not, we have not mastered this yet, but we keep talking. It's a good thing I know how to work from home. We need to get nowhere. Yeah, that is very true. But you know what? I get beyond that. I don't have to explain that to everybody else. I'll explain it to him. He knows who I am. But, you know, and that's something I have to work on and get used to. I'm not used to it. So, I'm not looking for the instant gratification. I know what we're building is going to be great.
I know, you know, we always say if we just help one person achieve something or feel good about themselves or conquer depression and anxiety and panic attacks, you know, we've accomplished more than we can even imagine. Yeah, we just want to help one person. That's it. Okay, so we have three tips for you to help you understand, you know, get through that boiling water phase, you know, from going from water to boil. And tip number one is understanding the process. You need to know where you're going. You need to know where the start line is and what process you're going to take to get there. So, understanding the process is tip number one.
And like I was saying before, while you're moving through getting from water to boil, you need to continue to work. You can't just sit there and watch it. You can't expect to get thin without doing the work. You got to put the work in to get there. Tip number two. Continue to work. You just said it. Whoops. Yeah, you got to continue to work. Continue to move and get through the hard times. And then tip number three is know the end result. Yeah, knowing the end result. One of the biggest things people fall prey to is not knowing where they're going.
So, whenever you're going on a road trip, you look at a map or you look at your phone and you figure out, okay, I'm going from point A to point B. However, you know where point B is. So many times in life, we just simply wander without a direction in life. If you ask someone, where are you going? I don't know, wherever it takes me. Wherever it takes you is never going to get you anywhere. All you're going to do is end up driving in circles, never getting to where you want to go. So, you need to know the end result before you start because if you don't know the end result, how are you ever going to get there? That's the biggest thing in these three tips.
Yeah, so again, it's understand the process, continue to work through and know the end result. All three. Those are the three. So, what else do we have for this episode? We do want to remind everyone about the contest. Yes, the contest ends when? Oh, I don't have it. It's 14 more days, whatever that date is. We have 14 more days to enter our rate, comment, and subscribe contest. And basically, what we're doing is we are going to give away five Standing Stronger t-shirts to someone who has subscribed to our podcast, rated it, and reviewed it.
So, if you would like to win a shirt, all you need to do is go to standingstronger.com forward slash contest and that will take you to the page where you can rate our podcast, subscribe to it, and that will automatically enter you in. We also have a free report we're working on called the three tips to stop depression and anxiety dead in its tracks, which I will tell you about next weekend or next week and how you can get that as well. What else we got, babe? I think we're wrapping up. All right. We're going to wrap that on up. Then what we're going to do now is how we always end the podcast is we're going to say a quick prayer. Lord, we just thank you for this day. We thank you for this podcast and the ability to reach those, Lord, that are struggling in their daily walk and just to bring hope to the hopeless, Lord. If we could just help one person today realize that they are great.
They are created by you, for you, for complete greatness, Lord. And we just pray over Shannon and lift him up to, you know, just for him to be restored in health and just to feel better so he can keep pushing on through. We love you, Lord. We thank you again for your son. In Jesus' name we pray. Yes. Thank you guys very much for sticking with me and bearing it out with me on this podcast. I do appreciate it. However, we do have an amazing thing coming up, and that's my favorite part, which is this theme song.
