Don't be consistently inconsistent
About this episode
Big Shannon and Little Shannon explain why being consistently inconsistent keeps a business from growing, and why marketing has to be a permanent priority instead of a short burst. They share practical habits: doing the hardest task first, auditing where time goes, and building accountability for staff and partners. Listeners leave with a clearer picture of how steady habits build momentum.
Show notes
Why inconsistency stalls growth
- Big Shannon cites a video from Nick Baer of Baer Performance Nutrition on people being consistently inconsistent: on for 30 days, off for months, then on again.
- Consistency is framed as a lifelong commitment, not a short stretch of effort.
- Without it, the snowball never builds enough momentum to reach the next level.
- A growing to-do list makes it easy to push marketing to the back burner, and the effects show up about 90 days later.
Putting marketing first
- The hosts say they focus heavily on helping clients and have neglected their own marketing and branding, including the podcast, tutorials and videos.
- The podcast is meant to come out every week for as long as Big Shannon is in business.
- Big Shannon says it is easy to get complacent when business is going well, but marketing should not wait until it is needed.
- Not every owner has to be the face of the business, but someone who is should be hired if the owner is not.
Habits that help
- Little Shannon does her personal tasks early, keeps a pen-and-paper to-do list, and assigns days to tasks like social media and client follow-up.
- Big Shannon mentions Brian Tracy's "eat the frog first": do the hardest work first, because motivation fades through the day.
- He also references Dave Ramsey's "pay yourself first" as a model for making something a priority.
- Find the system that works for you, whether paper or technology.
Staff and accountability
- Being busy and occasionally doing something is convenience, not consistency.
- Set clear expectations for staff, such as how many review requests go out per day, week or month.
- Leaders need to model the consistency they ask for from staff and partners.
- Big Shannon admits he used to make excuses about being an online business and says the hosts will now lead by example.
- An accountability partner is key, and the hosts invite listeners to share their struggles.
Finding the time
- List everything done in a week, then compare it with what needs to be done.
- Cutting time on social media and streaming can free up minutes for the priorities.
- Saying yes to one thing means saying no to another, a point Big Shannon attributes to Lysa TerKeurst's The Best Yes.
- Little Shannon adds that you can do anything but not everything.
- Big Shannon says he works very long days and wants to spend more time working on the business rather than in it.

KLT Authority podcast. Today we're talking about consistency. Welcome to the KLT Authority podcast, where we help you grow your business by leveraging the power of the internet and the technology that it offers. Here are your hosts, Big Shannon and Little Shannon. Yeah, that's right. The power couple with the same name. What's going on everyone? You heard that right. We have the same name. My name is Big Shannon. And I'm Little Shannon. And we are the power couple with the same name. There's no doubt about that. So today we're gonna be talking about a very important topic that we need to kind of preach to ourselves a little bit.
So in order to preach to ourselves, we're gonna teach you all what we need to work on. And hopefully that helps you move forward as it helps us move forward. Yes, today we are going to talk about consistency. And what does that look like for you within your business, for your staff, just ways to improve that consistency and why it's important. So first off, I wanna start this off with something I heard from a person that I actually follow. His name is Nick Baer. He's the owner of BPN, Baer Performance Nutrition. And he's a former officer who was also a ranger. I believe he was in the infantry as well. And I was in the infantry, so that kind of drew me to him. And I follow his stuff.
And he is a great example of consistency. But in one of his videos, he was talking about the importance of consistency and how a lot of people are consistently inconsistent and how that affects your business and how it stalls your growth. Because it's not about being consistent for 30 days, 60 days, 90 days, and taking a break for six months and then consistent for 30 days, taking a break for two weeks, and then consistent for two weeks, taking a break for four months and consistent for a year. It's about a journey and a lifelong journey of committing to being consistent, committing to being consistent at what you do.
So it was a great video and one that really made me think about my business and how things are done, especially when it comes to marketing our business and branding ourselves. We have been less than consistently consistent when it comes to the podcast, when it comes to creating tutorials and videos, when it comes to doing the things that affect the growth of our business long-term. The consistency has never really been there and it's easy to get complacent, especially when you're doing well. But the problem is you don't want to need to market your business when you need to market your business. Does that make sense? Yes, completely.
And I think one of the main reasons that stops consistency is the to-do list. It grows, it gets bigger, you're doing more. It becomes very easy to put things on the back burner, like you said, because things are flowing, they're moving along. And then when you stop doing them later, 90 days down the road, you start seeing the effects of you stopping at 90 days prior, right? Yeah, and unfortunately, when you are not consistent, that the snowball never builds enough to gain enough momentum in order to push you to the next level. So for us, we have great business. We have great businesses and we're extremely blessed.
However, we're in a stage of growth, we're in a stage of wanting to scale and go to the next level. And what I've realized is a problem is we put all of our efforts, all of our focus on helping our clients, which is great because our clients love us, our clients rarely leave us. However, we are in the business of helping everyone else and putting ourselves on the back burner, which that needs to stop if we wanna take the business to the actual next level. That doesn't mean we stop focusing so much on our clients, it just means we also start putting a consistent focus on our marketing, on our branding.
And Shannon and I, I actually haven't discussed this with her, but I've laid out an entire plan on exactly how we're gonna do that and what that's gonna look like. And we'll probably reveal that in another podcast, but it's something that we're gonna consistently focus on. So you can expect that this podcast is going to come out every single week and not for a month, not for six months, not for a year, but until I retire and no longer do this business, this podcast will be a priority. Well, once you, well, first of all, even when you're doing things in general, they become habits.
And then if you constantly train yourself, whether in your personal life or your business, to have those healthy habits, you start to, the flow starts to happen for you. So it's as simple as that time management we talk about, putting the things on the back burner, the things in priority that you know have to be done in a day. For me personally, I try to get all my personal things in early because I know what the rest of the day is gonna bring for me. And that's business, mom, coach, whatever I'm doing in a day that is going to fill me and my calendar to the max. We talked about that today.
We go hardcore to where by the end of the night and I lay down, I go, whew, I'm gonna do it again tomorrow, tomorrow, but I'm consistent now where I'm putting me first in the morning and accomplishing the things that I need to do. And then I do have a to-do list and that doesn't work for everybody, but it does work for me. So I always encourage, find what works for you. I know I use pen and paper. You love technology. Finding those things that I know in a timely manner, okay, these are the days that I'm doing social media management. These are the days I'm following up with clients.
These are the days I'm doing all of these things and maybe I'm not doing them all in the same day, every day of the week, but each week they get done. And I just have to prioritize around meeting schedules or conferences or Zoom call, whatever is gonna fall that week, I know what has to be done in that week to accomplish the goals that need to be done. Right, and Brian Tracy says it really well. Shannon laughs every time I say this, but eat the frog first. There's things in our lives that need to be done.
And if you look at productivity systems and how to accomplish your goals, all of these things are gonna tell you do the difficult stuff first because the longer you put it off, the more you're going to not wanna do it in your motivation. Motivation is something that ebbs and flows. So the longer the day goes on, most people's motivation starts to go down. So you do the things that are important to you first. And that's why when it comes to working out, it's great to do it in the morning. You get it done and out of the way. When it comes to marketing your business, you need to make sure that it's a priority and it gets done first.
You listen to someone like, what's the guy that does Financial Peace University? Dave Ramsey. Dave Ramsey. He says, pay yourself first. And when he says pay yourself first, make sure you're saving and investing and all that good stuff. However, you make it a priority because if you don't make it a priority, it gets missed. And when it comes to moving your business forward, it needs to be a consistent priority, not a consistent priority for a year or three months or six months. It needs to be a journey that you're committed to for as long as you are in business.
Because if you don't, it's going to be pushed to the wayside for all of those other things that seem more important than recording a podcast or creating a video tutorial or creating a social media post or doing the things that need to be done to move the business forward, move the needle forward. Now, not everyone needs to be the face and the voice of their business. However, if you're not going to be that person, you need to hire a person. Personally, I feel like if you were in, especially in today's day and age, you need to be, you need to brand yourself. And if you're not branding yourself, I think you're going to get left behind eventually. Right.
And across the board, like we're talking to business owners with the consistency that we do every day, but I also want to say to the business owners that have a staff there, you expect your staff to accomplish those goals as well. You know, whether it's making sure certain things are done, you know, with your review system, making sure, you know, we fall, we hear that a lot, you know, like, well, they get really consistent and then they get busy and they stop asking for it. Well, that's not consistent. That's just convenience. You know, they just find a way to say, oh, I had time this time, but I didn't have this time. No, that's not making a healthy habit.
That's not asking, that's not following the consistency rule. So I would say, find the things for even your staff and having that accountability of how many reviews you expect them to send out. If you have X number of customers in a day, I expect this many reviews to go out in, you know, in that day or this many a week or this many a month. And the consistency across the board with that comes from the amount of reviews you're gonna receive back. So, you know, not just for yourself as the owner or a manager, but also for your staff. And I know we'll talk about this another time, but the accountability that goes with your consistency is very key and you gotta find that accountability partner.
Right, and we all need to lead by example. You can't ask your staff to be consistent. You can't ask your partner to be consistent and then be inconsistent yourself. And that's what we're working on right now is our clients, we hammer comes to reviews. So review questions need to come out. When it comes to talking to your customers about improving the, you know, the reputation of your business, it needs to be a consistent thing each and every day. When it comes to social media and building your brand, it needs to be consistent every single day. And then they look at us and say, well, I haven't seen a video from you. I haven't seen a podcast from you.
I'm looking at your reviews and you haven't had a couple of reviews in quite a while. And, you know, finally I said, you know what, you're right. I used to make excuses. Hey, listen, I'm not a local business. I'm an online business. And the things that help me as much don't help you. And the things that help you don't help me as much. However, that was just an excuse, one that I was using because, you know, I thought, hey, listen, I'm different because the way I do things is different. But it's not the truth. So that's one of the reasons behind this. Listen, the things I'm going to ask you to do, I'm going to lead by example and do ourselves.
We're going to build and we're going to scale and we're going to increase the brand by example. We're going to show you exactly how to do it. I think across the board, the number one concern with any dilemma, anything that's hindering you from accomplishing, staying on track or the consistency, the accountability, will always be time. Time is one of those things that I think if you could, and for my tip on this, is if you could create a list of everything you do in a week and then evaluate that list and be honest, like go throughout your whole day. Like there could be days like where I sit and I'm like, well, I could not be on Facebook. I could not be on Instagram. I could not be doing this.
And I've started removing those things throughout my day and I've figured out I have a lot more time on my hands. So with that being said, like look at your list and say, is there anything here that I'm not utilizing my time in the proper manner to stay consistent? Can I replace this with this so that I can stay consistent with what my goal is? Find that, if it's five or 10 minutes, whatever it is, whether you're writing or content, whatever it is that you're trying to get done and accomplish, there is time in the day. You just have to find and evaluate and say, this is when it's going to be. And I think that's number one tip to consistency.
Yep, and when you think about it, it's not that you don't have time, it's that you don't choose to spend your time on that. If we look at how much time we spend on Twitter, how much time we spend on TikTok, how much time we spend on Instagram and Facebook, and how much time we spend binge watching Netflix and things of that nature, you quickly realize that you do have time. You just have chosen to spend your time in a different way, which isn't bad. Every once in a while we need to binge on some Netflix, every once in a while we need to let our mind wander on TikTok. However, it's not that you don't have time, it's that you've chosen to spend your time elsewhere.
And anytime, and this is important too, and I forget who taught me this, but this is not an original thought, anytime you say yes to something, you're saying no to something else. I told you that, and I read it in Lisa Terkhurst's The Best Yes book. Gotcha. Yeah, absolutely the truth. And one thing I say in our program, and I've learned it, I'm sure, at Women of Faith along the way, was you can do anything, but you can't do everything.
And that's what I'm saying, if you make that list throughout the week and say like, man, I can't believe all the things that I am doing, or make that list of what you are doing, and then make that separate list of what you need to be doing, and see where you can flip-flop some things around. And again, I'm not trying to make it, one of the things that we're very consistent at is work. And we have to find a way to stop work, to enjoy life and do other things. So we're trying to reevaluate time management, which is a whole nother podcast in itself. But for that time management, there's a lot of things we have to do consistently to give us the time to manage. Right, I mean, that's the truth.
One thing I am consistent at is that I consistently work from the time I wake up to the time I go to bed. And I've been carving out time for working out, carving, I've always carved out time for my wife and I've always carved out time for my family. However, I will work 16 hours a day and do it happily. And that's an issue in the terms of, I probably shouldn't work as much, but a blessing because I actually love everything I do. So however, I just want to move away from working as much in the business and start working on the business. That's why this type of stuff is so important. Yeah, so I would say if you have anything to add to, please comment, let us know what you're struggling with.
Where's your consistency, you know, goals that you're trying to make sure you need an accountability partner. We'll be those people for you. I'll help you be accountable. Let's be the accountability partners. And listen, she is a mean accountability partner. I'm like, I want cookie dough. She's like, oh yeah, mister, I'm going to do abs. That's just common sense. That is the truth. Hey, listen, one of the great things about working with your wife and doing life with your wife, the way we do it is man, we do have a ton of fun and I love that she does keep me accountable. And I love that she does it in a way that's just right to the point and everything else. But today is a busy day.
However, we said, you know what, even if it's a 15 minute podcast, because we're here at 16 minutes right now, we need to do it. And we need to do it because we need to be consistency. And you know what, since we need to be consistent, let's just jump on there and talk about consistency and how it can help you succeed in life. And I would actually suggest looking up Nick Bear, BPN Fitness on, or BPN Nutrition on YouTube and watch some of his videos. This dude is the example of consistency. I mean, all you got to do is look at him physically and you can tell he's consistent. But I've watched him and I've actually watched his entire journey.
I've owned a business longer than he's owned a business. And I watched his entire journey from the time he started the company to now that's a multimillion dollar company. And I watched it all on YouTube and he was consistent. So I know each and every in and out about it. I feel like I know him as a person. He has no clue who I am. However, he's inspired me. And he's inspired me when I had a business that was bigger than his. When my business was bigger than his, he still inspired me. So a great person to listen to, great person to watch. And I would suggest checking that as well. But listen, if you want more, go to kltauthority.com. That's kltauthority.com.
That's where you're gonna find our podcast. You're gonna see a lot more tutorials coming out. I'm going to document the journey of what I call pursuing curiosity. So I am a master at many things.
